When this particular species of “Hippo” landed on our new private beach, we used the opportunity to increase awareness of Parrot Jungle Island in South Florida. “Our HippoH2™ slide is here and we are ready for summer camp 2008! Here's a little history of how we got here. In addition to hosting several weeks of 4-H summer camp each summer, we also partner with Camp CoHoLo to provide a week-long camp experience for children with cancer. For several years Camp CoHoLo personnel have offered to help in our efforts to replace a water slide that was reaching the end of its useful life. For close to two years we have been researching water slides. Finding a contractor or pool company to even talk to us was very difficult. To install a water slide, catch pool on the bottom and a “gray” water pumping system required decking and fencing around the entire complex which put the price tag at approximately $200,000. In addition, there was annual licensing and inspections. One day last year my maintenance technician and I were driving back to camp and passed a commercial recreational beach called Linoma Beach. This facility had recently installed The Hippo® water slide. Although far too big for our needs (at 175 feet long) we stopped and spoke with the owner about his experience with the slide. The folks at Linoma Beach had nothing but positive things to say about the slide and the company that had supplied it to them. We got the manufacturer’s number and put in a call. Many, many conversations later the slide was ordered and delivered approximately 6 weeks after the order. Although we do not have any firsthand experience with running the slide, it truly seems to fit our needs. We already have a 100 x 100 foot recreational concrete pad. All we needed to do was get electricity down there. The nearest electricity was about 150 yards, so about $3,000 later we had the two 20 amp circuits required to run the slide and we were ready to roll.
There were several factors in helping us make a decision to purchase The HippoH2™ from FreeStyle Slides®:
- The 115 foot long slide fit the concrete pad we had.
- There is no staying water, climbing hazard if left unattended, no licenses, permits, or state inspections required. Our plan is to inflate the slide before every use (which takes less than 20 minutes) have a lifeguard and staff available during its use and then when we're done, deflate and roll the slide up.
- There is no additional insurance required. Our insurance company was contacted and they are satisfied that because of the operational procedures we plan to implement, the information provided to them from Freestyle Slides® and the fact that we are replacing a current water slide, the standard camp liability policy we have in force will cover the additional event without additional cost. There was a slight increase to the property damage insurance to cover replacement or catastrophic failure repair.
- In the event of catastrophic failure, Freestyle Slides® will send a technician to us within 48 hours. We have verified that the sewing support necessary to repair a catastrophic failure is available locally. Therefore, we are assuming no more than a seven to ten day turnaround is required to get the slide up and rolling again.
- When deflated and packed up, it fits on two standard pallets. This makes it easy to store during the off-season.
- So far the support from Freestyle Slides® has been outstanding. We have spoken with at least three other slide owners who purchased from Freestyle Slides® and they said that we can expect this level of support to continue long after we have installed our slide.
