The vision behind the program
The FreeStyle Slides® Community Enrichment Program has now been officially established and is available to all youth organizations worldwide in the hope that children everywhere will have an opportunity to participate in youth enrichment programs such as this. Our vision for this program is first of all to bring as much joy to the lives of children affected by cancer and blood disorders. We’ve seen our slides bring excitement to thousands of children all around the world and we hope that this same laughter filled experience will bring healing to these kids. Secondly our vision is to introduce a novel concept that we believe can help transform youth camps into an even more positive environment, especially for those in need of hope!
How it all began
In July last year, the FreeStyle Slides® sales team received a call from Buzz Wheeler, Camp Director for the Eastern Nebraska 4-H Center. Mr. Wheeler had recently seen The Hippo® slide at a lakeside campground in Gretna, Nebraska. For nearly two years the 4-H camp had been researching water slides to replace one they had that was reaching the end of its useful life. However, Mr. Wheeler felt that The Hippo®, at 175 feet long, was too large for the space available at the 4-H Center, but at the same time, he was very intrigued by the new 115 foot long HippoH2™ slide recently introduced by FreeStyle Slides®. There was however one stumbling block. The Center, unfortunately, did not have sufficient funds to purchase a new HippoH2™. Upon learning of the 4-H Center's enquiry, Stephen and Donna Philp, owners of FreeStyle Slides®, were so impressed by the good work being done by the camp, in conjunction with the Children’s Cancer Camps of Nebraska (Camp CoHoLo), that they decided to embark on a new path for their company. They formed what is now known as the FreeStyle Slides® Community Enrichment Program. This program was initiated specifically for the purpose of supporting youth organizations of all types around the world. As a result, the Eastern Nebraska 4-H Center was extended a highly discounted special price for a new HippoH2™. The price was affordable enough for Camp CoHolo to assist with the purchase of the new water slide. The new HippoH2™ was delivered and set up in late spring of 2008 and will be available to all 2008 summer camp sessions at the 4-H Center, including special sessions for camp CoHoLo children. CoHoLo is an acronym for Courage, Hope and Love, the guiding principles behind the formation of Camp CoHoLo. Camp CoHoLo now hosts 140 to 160 children each July during an eight-day camp held at the Eastern Nebraska 4-H Center near Gretna.
